Red Herring Productions has designed an original shadow puppet play to accompany Ravel's orchestral arrangement of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition." The result is stunning animated visual poetry that enhances the delicate and powerful musical score. The moving images resonate with the documented works of Victor Hartmann, whose sketches inspired Mussorgsky's composition.
Through a modern adaptation of traditional shadow puppetry, Red Herring uses scrolling backgrounds drawn onto acetate transparencies and manipulates opaque jointed figures on overhead projectors. The piece requires minimal technical capabilities.
